Apache Lake

Summer and our skin is dry

Scrubbed by lake water

Relentless and cool

The days are lazy and long

We sweat and burn

And shed our winter skin

Under the sliding sun

That is glitter on the water

And burns the mountains

And the rocks red

As it finally sinks

Night comes

The mosquitoes sing

The fish jump

The Milky Way shines

On our skin and mine glows

In defiance

While his is dark and subtle

As the night

Drawn to our sweet blood

The mosquitoes hum

Midnight in the desert

Apache Lake

There is only the outlines

Of the cacti, all slopes and curves

And the rocks and hills,

Sharp and fierce angles

And our bodies

A combination of both as we

Wrap ourselves in this place.
