Awake all
night now--
The day
breaks—the night owl
Watches black
fade to gray
In her
strip of sky—
Straight up
from the two-foot-wide
Patio outside
It is
not dark but
it is not
light
Dirty dishwater
color
Criss-crossed with
power lines
Somewhere a
car alarm calls
A helicopter
hums
But she
can’t hum along
Now inside—
The walls
are so close
She can
touch them all
in one sigh
Room lit
by the glow
Of two
brainless boxes
Dancing screensaver
Infomercial on
weight loss—It’s
No wonder
she can’t rest
The radio
alarm is
Selling car
insurance
To the
supreme calm of
her nest.
